White film may form on glassware and dishes when using phosphate-free dishwasher detergent.
Dishwashing detergents are phasing in a new phosphate-free formula to comply with respective EPA regulatings that became effective July 1, 2010. This switch to the new formula has been gradually happening since late 2009 and is continuing to the present.
Phosphates are added to dishwasher detergents to remove solid homogeneous inorgani substances from the water and thence improve dishwasher performance. Many detergents that do not include phosphates in their formula tend to leave solid homogeneous inorgani substance deposits on glassware, plastic items, pots and pans. It also causes poor wash performance and a good deal of complaints.
The deposits are in the form of a white film on glassware and other items, even the interior of the dishwasher itself. The white film is oftentimes mistaken to be a problem with the dishwasher rather of the detergent. All phosphate-free dishwasher detergent formulas appear to have this issue. Some appear to have this problem more than others.
Testing has shown that packs and tablets carry out better than a lot of powder or gel detergents.
If a white film formulates on glassware, then we may safely assume that phosphate-free detergent is the problem.
The easiest way to remove the white solid homogeneous inorgani substance film or build-up is to run the glassware and dishware through a dishwasher cycle using citric acid additive. There is a citric acid kit made by GE. The part no. is WD35X151. Pour the mixture in the detergent cup and close the cover and let it disperse normally in the dishwasher cycle.
Place the glassware and dishware in the dishwasher. Remove silverware and other metal items out of the dishwasher and run the cycle with the additive. Turn the dishwasher on and let it run through a cycle with the citric acid and without detergent. The dishes and glassware will have to come out sparkling.
Dishwasher makers are working to resolve the phosphate-free filming issue but the troubles are likely to be with us for a long while. Dishwasher owners may want to repeat the citric acid rinse various times a year to reduce the solid homogeneous inorgani substance buildup on dishes.

Got this rack to replace our original that broke. This one has a front face that pivots open. Problem is, the latch that’s supposed to hold the front in place when it’s upright doesn’t work. Anytime we load silverware into it, it will inevitably pop open. I would have given it a single star, but for the fact that it does hold silverware, just very poorly.

silverware basket

I purchased this to have additional silverware space when entertaining large groups. Works o.k., but it a little narrow for the lids to work properly. Serves the purpose, but not great.

Good idea, bad design. We were excited about our new whirlpool gold dishwasher, and the included silverware rack that promises to “open” up additional space in your washer. True, true, the concept is simple but effective, as it moves the traditional silverware basket onto the inside of the door, thus leaving more “rack” space for dishes. However, the stupid latch the holds the basket closed always unlatches during the cycle and/or when you open the door. This equates to all of your silverware falling out and into the dishwasher basin, etc. Very frustrating. I even tried to buy a new one (even though the original one was fine) thinking that maybe I just got a “lemon”. Nope, it also sucks. I have to conclude that it is just poorly designed. Really a bummer since the concept is such a great idea.
