GE Refrigerator Repair

My GE refrigerator was freezing everything no matter where the temperature was set. Found on line trouble shooting and found that the most probable cause was a broken flapper that regulates cold air coming from the freezer. I found the part number, looked it up on Amazon and purchased it. Two days later I had it and installed it in the fridge. Instructions were simple and installation was easy. Works like new now.

Multipurpose filter material

I found this to be good for replacing the carbon filters in my range hood. I can probably get about ten filters out of one sheet. I cut them oversized and fold them over the old filters, then slide them into place. The retainers hold the new material in place.

Excellent for Refrigerator Air Filter

I bought this to replace the carbon air filter in my refrigerator. The OEM filter is a piece of carbon paper in a little cardboard box with a cutout in one side. I simply opened the box, removed the paper, cut a piece of this to size, put in the box, and voila, new filter. This is much cheaper than buying the OEM filters and enough here to last me for years.

Easy install

I bought this fan motor for my Frigidaire Side-by-Side. The repairman was acting like a complete twerp so instead of paying him upwards of $200 for parts and labor I instead got this for $40. Opened the backplate in the freezer section, took out the old fan motor, plugged in this one (every plug is color coded) et voila!

It works, I am happy and the repairman is unhappy so I am even more happy. Plus my wife thinks I am this electronics genius. Ha!

Relatively easy repair saves $$$

I had a GE electronic refrigerator with motherboard in the back of the unit that wasn’t cooling the refrigerator section sufficiently. The freezer section was still keeping items frozen. Freezer was on top on this unit. I used the following troubleshooting guide to diagnose the evaporator fan motor as the problem then ordered the replacement from Amazon. The fan replacement is relatively easy and prolongs the life of this expensive refrigerator without the cost of an appliance repairman visit. I had replaced the motherboard within the last couple of years so I was glad to see that it was just the fan this time around. You Tube has lots of videos that show you how to replace the fan on most refrigerator types.

Fix your Fridge! Drop-in OEM Part Replacement

Milk spoiling? Fridge runs and runs and is cold in the back of the freezer, but no air blows when you open it up? You can fix your fridge! Rather than throw out that >$1000 fridge, buy a simple to install replacement part!

This part was an exact drop-in replacement for the old motor in my GE refrigerator (same Panasonic part number).

I did have to remove a molded on silicone rubber mounting piece on the old motor’s wiring harness (this is seen in some photos of this motor out on the web) so I could mount it on the new motor. If you want to do this (optional, OCD engineer step), slice the rubber carefully lengthwise along the direction that the wiring runs so that you can free it from the over-molded part. Once you have the old wiring harness free, you can slip the rubber mount onto the new motor’s wiring harness in such a way that the new wires run where the old wires were placed.

While you have the fridge opened up for service, you should go ahead a check the controller board for damage (specifically the power resistors). Check the web and youtube for how-to videos that show how to measure voltage on the control board to see if it is damaged as well (Amazon sells these boards as well). I didn’t need them, but I bet there are videos that walk you through the replacement process for the motor itself.

Now my fridge works great again! Spoiled milk? A thing of the past!

I gave this motor only 4 stars because although Amazon went above and beyond getting me the new motor by Monday afternoon when ordered Saturday afternoon, the old motor should not have failed in the way that it did (dead coil in the brushless DC motor drive as well as a horrid grinding noise from the rotor for months before the motor finally died).

Update: Extra, unexpected benefit -> our icemaker started working well again. It worked before, but was real slow to fill. So if your icemaker works but is slow, the fan may be the culprit there too!

RG-100 or WF1CB

The Ice and Water Filter for our Frigidaire fridge lasted only 5 months for us, when our water from the fridge started tasting weird (chlorine-tasting). Replacing the used filter was also a snap, no tools required.

WF1CB is supposed to replace RG-100, which fits all PureSource equipped refrigerators produced after April 2001. It has a rated capacity of 6-9 months, or 400 gallons, whichever comes first.

when you order these filters picture shows frigidaire filter with box. when you receive them your in for a surprise. they are not frigidaire and they are not in a box. they are wrapped individually in bubble wrap.not a single marking on filter as to manufacturer or filter size. absolutely no installation instructions at all. they will not tell you the manufacturer except that it is a reputable manufacturer. they do offer a ups return label if you are not satisfied, except i am sure you forfeit your original postage of $7 dollars plus, so they expect me to return these and lose the postage? for about $5.00 more or $59.95 i found the original fridgidaire filters in a box,and that includes postage on ebay.i will eat these phony frigidaire filters but i also think they should stop advertising them as fridgedaire filters in original box.

White film may form on glassware and dishes when using phosphate-free dishwasher detergent.

Dishwashing detergents are phasing in a new phosphate-free formula to comply with respective EPA regulatings that became effective July 1, 2010. This switch to the new formula has been gradually happening since late 2009 and is continuing to the present.

Phosphates are added to dishwasher detergents to remove solid homogeneous inorgani substances from the water and thence improve dishwasher performance. Many detergents that do not include phosphates in their formula tend to leave solid homogeneous inorgani substance deposits on glassware, plastic items, pots and pans. It also causes poor wash performance and a good deal of complaints.

The deposits are in the form of a white film on glassware and other items, even the interior of the dishwasher itself. The white film is oftentimes mistaken to be a problem with the dishwasher rather of the detergent. All phosphate-free dishwasher detergent formulas appear to have this issue. Some appear to have this problem more than others.

Testing has shown that packs and tablets carry out better than a lot of powder or gel detergents.

If a white film formulates on glassware, then we may safely assume that phosphate-free detergent is the problem.

The easiest way to remove the white solid homogeneous inorgani substance film or build-up is to run the glassware and dishware through a dishwasher cycle using citric acid additive. There is a citric acid kit made by GE. The part no. is WD35X151. Pour the mixture in the detergent cup and close the cover and let it disperse normally in the dishwasher cycle.

Place the glassware and dishware in the dishwasher. Remove silverware and other metal items out of the dishwasher and run the cycle with the additive. Turn the dishwasher on and let it run through a cycle with the citric acid and without detergent. The dishes and glassware will have to come out sparkling.

Dishwasher makers are working to resolve the phosphate-free filming issue but the troubles are likely to be with us for a long while. Dishwasher owners may want to repeat the citric acid rinse various times a year to reduce the solid homogeneous inorgani substance buildup on dishes.

Got this rack to replace our original that broke. This one has a front face that pivots open. Problem is, the latch that’s supposed to hold the front in place when it’s upright doesn’t work. Anytime we load silverware into it, it will inevitably pop open. I would have given it a single star, but for the fact that it does hold silverware, just very poorly.

Bad design

Good idea, bad design. We were excited about our new whirlpool gold dishwasher, and the included silverware rack that promises to “open” up additional space in your washer. True, true, the concept is simple but effective, as it moves the traditional silverware basket onto the inside of the door, thus leaving more “rack” space for dishes. However, the stupid latch the holds the basket closed always unlatches during the cycle and/or when you open the door. This equates to all of your silverware falling out and into the dishwasher basin, etc. Very frustrating. I even tried to buy a new one (even though the original one was fine) thinking that maybe I just got a “lemon”. Nope, it also sucks. I have to conclude that it is just poorly designed. Really a bummer since the concept is such a great idea.

I was using the Filtrete dark blue 1500 rated filters and thought they were great. But eventually I found the air flow was less and less and then it almost stopped altogether. I had to call my Heat/ AC guys and they told me that if I used the higher rated filter (1500 or so, different for each system), the one that ‘stopped’ more allergens/ dust/ etc, that these high rated ones fill up quickly with all the gunk the catch, and that they can slow down the air flow so much that it may cause your heat/ AC machinery to overheat and damage itself.

He switched me to the red Filtretes- they are rated 1000 and not 1500. If you truly need higher levels of filtration, make sure your heat/ ac system can handle it, and maybe you have to change the filters more often (the really highly rated filters grab EVERYTHING so all the dust etc builds up much more quickly and could block the air flow entirely in less time than say the red 1000 ones. So stay as low as you can on the ratings, but if you have to block extra things like dust or mites or allergens, ask your heat/ AC guy to tell you which filter to use, knowing it will capture this much dust/mites/ allergens, and how often you have to change it. ps I myself am going to ask them if i can use the higher rated filters- say the 1500s- if i switch them out much more often. we’ll see.

Try the Advanced Allergen filter if you have allergies or pets

My house uses forced air for heating. The disadvantage of such a system is that it distributes the dust in the air everywhere in the house. However, it is supposed to be possible to filter out the dust. Over the years, I have steadily increased the quality of the filter that I use for my forced air heating system. However, until now I have not noticed any obvious difference in my allergic reactions that seem to start with the heating season.

There are two cats in my house. I have read that cat dander, tiny flakes of cat skin shed by the cats, is five times smaller than household dust particles. It stays in the air much longer than ordinary dust before it settles. Because of its small size it requires a more efficient filter to get it out of the air.

Until this year, I have used of variety of filters with mixed results. However, this year, I started using the 3M Advanced Allergen Filters, the ones in the blue wrapper. These have a 3M Microparticle Performance Rating of 1500, but do not have a MERV rating listed. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and is a number from 1 to 12, produced from a test designed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). A higher MERV rating indicates better filter performance. 3M uses particle data between 0.3 and 1.0 micron size to calculate a Microparticle Performance Rating or MPR. The higher the MPR, the better the filter. However, higher rated filters cost more.

The difference made by the Advanced filter was immediately obvious. My running nose stopped running. I assume that the new Advanced filters must be taking out more of the dust in the air including the cat dander. I have not noticed a change in the speed of the circulated air. The additional cost of the Advanced filter is worth it if you have allergies or pets. However, if you are happy with a lower-rated and lower-cost filter, then you can continue using that one. I suggest that you check Amazon and vendors on the web to get the best price.

Funtions as expected

This 6-pack is a very economical (cheap) way of buying filters. Especially because Lowes & Home Depot did not have my size (14×30) in stock. I got the medium-quality filtrete micro allergen because I wanted good filtration, but not the most expensive. They are perfectly suitable, with an indication of which side should face the intake, and how often they should be replaced (3 months). I’m happy

The motor was very easy to install in my Kitchenaid refrigerator. I found the instructions for replacing the motor at the link below.
I found it easier to take everything apart and put everything back together by taking pictures at every step.

Exact replacement for my fridge

When the ice maker in my fridge stopped dispensing ice I dreaded a costly repair. After looking up the replacement part I ordered it and installed it. I had to search the net for instructions on disassembling the dispenser in the door, but it was an easy repair. I did have my wife help align the auger drive rod, so an extra set of hands is advised.

These humidifier wicks work OK, but they do not put out the kind of humidity that the original replacements do… I ordered four, which will probably take me through the heating season, but find that I now have to run another humidifier in a remote part of my apartment to really do the job… Note: The item now pictured is not the ones you will get… The ones being shipped now have a blue fabric-like covering… Again, they are good, but not quite as good as the originals, which have a mesh covering… (m.)

great for the price

I was having a hard time finding an affordable filter, since they get thrown away anyway. This worked fabulous for my humidifier unit. The filter was a bit too tall, but I cut it down to size and it works great! Will be purchasing more!
